Saturday 9th May 2020
When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved – ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II.
The 75th anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period.
To commemorate this important time we are organising a free 75th VE Day Celebration Street Party Picnic on Saturday 9th May 2020 from 12 noon until 4.00 pm. Join us at the Park House / Glenfield Memorial Hall car park located on Stamford Street, LE3 8DL.
Bring your picnic and we'll supply the chairs and tables, soft refreshments, live Jazz band and singer, with Circus workshop, balloon modelling and bubble making for the children. Dress in the era and you could win a prize. A great afternoon for your family & friends on the Bank holiday weekend!
The event will be supporting SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, who provide lifelong support for people who serve, or have served, in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army or Royal Air Force – and their families since 1885.
Friday 27th November 2020
Late November 2020, Glenfield Parish Council will be organising a Christmas Fayre which will involve a range of gift and craft stalls and the switching on of the Christmas lights at Park House. This year, it will take place on Friday, 27th November 2020 from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm within the grounds of Park House and the Memorial Hall, Stamford Street, LE3 8DL.
There will be refreshments, Christmas carols and handbell ringers after the Christmas lights are switched on at 7.00 pm. For children there will be a Christmas themed puppet show, craft table and Santa will be waiting in his Grotto with special gifts for those children who have been very good.
